One of the reasons Colesberg gets so cold is that it is so high, 1400m (around the height of Ben Nevis). The central plateau of Africa is all at a considerable altitude from Nairobi to Johannesburg. At some point, though, as one heads towards the coast one has to descend and in South Africa, this descent is usually quite sudden. The edge of this central plateau is known as the Great Escarpment.

It has been a week of ups and downs here. Admittedly, not of roller coaster proportions but more akin to driving slightly too fast over a hump-backed bridge.

When more than three quarters of over 700 gardeners who tried it say they liked the taste and the texture, and just under three quarters say theyâd grow it again, you know youâre on to something. That was the result of a trial of âLettonyâ lettuce done last year by readers of Which? Gardening.
âLettonyâ is a new dual purpose lettuce that be grown for either its baby leaves or its attractive curly mature heads. It doesnât make a tight heart, but instead develops a loose head then can be cut at any point in its growth, although leaving it to mature of course produces the most useable salads.
